FAQs

Your Questions on Vitamin C, Answered!

Vitamin C is touted as an ultra-versatile vitamin with an impressive list of benefits. Here, we bring you answers to questions that may bug you about this body’s excellent helper.

Vitamin C is not produced or stored in the body. Hence, we have to replenish this vital vitamin through diet.

Even if you take a large amount of vitamin C, your body will only absorb what it needs and flush out the rest. It is better to take vitamin C consistently over a longer period. Opt to take vitamin C via a Sustained Release System where 100mg of vitamin C is released hourly, across five hours, ensuring maximum absorption by the body. The elderly and those feeling under the weather may need an extra boost of vitamin C for added protection.

The content of vitamin C in fruits and vegetables may vary, especially after washing, cutting and cooking. To get 500mg of vitamin C, you need to eat 7.5 oranges, 6 cups of broccoli or 119 carrots. This is impossible to achieve in our daily diet as it is expensive. The smarter way to get 500mg of vitamin C is through supplementation.

This is a misconception. There are various sources of vitamin C supplement made from ingredients that would not aggravate gastric pain. Opt for vitamin C extracted from corn, which is gentle on sensitive stomach.

A review done by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) showed that high intakes of vitamin C has a low toxicity risk and adverse effect has been reported when the daily consumption is 3000mg/day1. The Ministry of Health Malaysia has outlined that the maximum vitamin C intake at 2000mg/day.

Bioflavonoids are antioxidants found only in plants and citrus fruits. They work synergistically with vitamin C to enhance its absorption and utilisation. You can find bioflavonoids in the pulp and white core that runs through the centre of oranges. It is bitter and chewy, so they are usually discarded. In Shaklee, we use bioflavonoids from citrus fruits, giving you wholesome benefits in the form of a concentrated and convenient tablet.

Vitamin C can be found abundantly in the white blood cells – one of our immune cells. One of its roles is to support and boost immune protection. Studies have found that people who regularly take vitamin C supplement may experience shorter colds with milder symptoms. However, it is less likely to prevent you from catching cold2,3. As Vitamin C is safe for long-term daily intake, you may start supplementing with a minimum of 500mg Vitamin C daily to boost your immune protection.

Yes. Smokers use up a lot of vitamin C in the body at a faster rate, as compared to non-smokers. A study found that smokers have extremely low vitamin C levels in their body4 while another study found that people with vitamin C deficiency have a high risk of getting lung infections2. Thus, vitamin C supplementation is highly recommended among smokers and people who live closely with smokers.
